Description

Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. In 2015, an estimated 3 million U.S. adults reported being diagnosed with IBD - either Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

IBD is inflammation within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract characterized by chronic or relapsing immune system activation.

There are two types of IBD:

ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Ulcerative colitis occurs in the inner lining of the colon (large intestine) or rectum and the common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and rectal bleeding while those with Crohn’s disease, experience pain in the abdomen, especially in the lower right side with symptoms—diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and occasionally bleeding - and occurs in the deep layers of the intestinal wall.

Generally, antiinflammatory drugs or immunosuppressive drugs such as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and 6- mercaptopurine are used to treat IBD; steroids and non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs are effective for temporary relief of symptoms. However, drug induced severe side effects occur, and most of these treatments are inadequate. Therefore, it is crucial to identify a new and safe drug for preventing or treating IBD. Consequently, many people with IBD turn to alternative medicine including traditional plant-based remedies. (Taken from a review written in Molecules 2013, 18, 7253-7270; doi:10.3390/molecules18067253) Did you know that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 4 people living on this planet is infected with one or more parasites? This is something many might assume is more of a third world country problem, but with our world becoming more and more interconnected through travel and immigration, the parasite issue is becoming more prevalent in developed countries. The United States, for example, has millions of people that suffer from some sort of parasitic infection. Parasites like tapeworms, roundworms, pinworms and many others are a serious, if often neglected and undiagnosed health problem.  (information source)

The genus Candida contains about 150 species; however, most are environmental organisms. C. albicans is a member of the commensal microflora. It colonizes the oral mucosal surface of 30–50% of healthy people. The rate of carriage increases with age and in persons with dental prostheses up to 60%. Opportunistic infection caused by Candida species is termed candidiasis. At least one episode of vulvovaginal candidiasis (or thrush) concerns 50 to 75% of women of childbearing age. Candidiasis can also affect the oral cavity, penis, skin, nails, cornea, and other parts of the body. In immunocompromised persons, untreated candidiasis poses the risk of systemic infection and fungemia. Candida can be an important etiological factor in the infection of chronic wounds that are difficult to treat; this is mainly related to the production of biofilm.  (information source)

Endometriosis, a chronic disease in which endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus on various other organs, affects about 10 percent of women of reproductive age, causing pain and sometimes infertility, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Bowel endometriosis, often misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), occurs when lesions grow on the peritoneum (the membrane lining the inside of the abdomen and covering the abdominal organs), the rectum, the intestines, and other deeper bowel levels, notes the Seckin Endometriosis Center. Bowel symptoms begin to appear during adolescent years. According to Tamer Seckin, MD, a board-certified gynecologist and laparoscopic surgeon in private practice at Seckin Endometriosis Center in New York City and the cofounder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, around 80 percent of adolescent patients have abdominal symptoms with periods: discomfort, gassiness, bloating, and diarrhea. The symptoms settle down with the disease's progression and a patient will experience painful bowel movements, accompanied with pain during sex, as well as constipation, diarrhea, and bloating. These symptoms can still be pronounced even at the superficial stage of the disease. (information source)

Endometriosis has another comorbid GI condition called Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), which is also closely related to IBS. The increased risk for SIBO in endometriosis patients is likely due to inflammation from endometriosis causing a reduction or alteration of intestinal motility and bacteria. While SIBO is one of the many problems associated with endometriosis, it is an important one to address. (information source)

For a long time, medical practitioners believed that SIBO was rare and mainly due to anatomical anomaly. Now, though, we know better. SIBO is a widely misdiagnosed and missed condition: up to 84% of patients with IBS also have SIBO. SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. The small intestine is the longest part of the digestive system at about 22 feet long. There is a minimal number of bacteria in the small intestine, and most bacteria are limited to the large intestine.

In SIBO, though, bacteria overpopulate the small intestine. Instead of allowing the intestine to absorb food into the body, the bacteria take over and feeds on it instead. The bacteria then produce gases, leading to many of the uncomfortable symptoms of SIBO.

SIBO can strike anyone, but those most at risk for developing the condition include those with:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

  • Low stomach acid levels

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome, particularly with diarrhea (IBS-D)

  • Surgery or alternation to their GI tracts, such as bariatric surgery or colectomy

  • History of alcohol abuse

  • Compromised immune systems

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Celiac or Crohn’s disease

  • Diabetics

  • A recent food-borne illness

Many of these conditions, such as Crohn’s Disease and IBS-D, have overlapping symptoms with SIBO. This can cause many people to go undiagnosed and thus unable to treat the underlying condition.

Common symptoms of SIBO include:

  • Bloating and gas

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Food intolerances

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Skin rashes

  • Vitamin deficiencies, particularly B12

  • Anemia

  • Unintentional weight loss

  • Nutrient malabsorption

Salt is an essential component of daily life that balances the physiological functions of the human body as well as other living systems. Different varieties of salts are available in the global market. Out of many salt varieties, Himalayan rock salts have gained tremendous importance among consumers due to its diverse nutritional and medicinal properties. There are two types of Himalayan rock salts. One is the Himalayan pink salt and the other one is Himalayan black salt. A study revealed that Himalayan black salt was irregular in shape with a quadrilateral, cubic, irregular crystalline structure. The Himalayan black salt exhibited antioxidant effect and interestingly showed low Na levels than common sea salt and Himalayan pink salt. The Himalayan black salt also contained important minerals like iron, calcium and magnesium which are beneficial to human health thus exhibiting superior characteristics over other conventional table salts. (information source)

To get the unique taste this kind of salt is famous for—a deep umami, almost rotten egg flavor— the salt is cooked in a kiln with spices and charcoal. The exposure to high heat and charcoal causes some of the sodium chloride in the salt to undergo a chemical reaction to form sodium sulfide and hydrogen sulfide. (information source)

Black salt contains sodium chloride and traces of minerals and chemical compounds such like sodium sulfate, magnesium and iron in the form of ferrous sulfate etc. (information source)

The black salt doesn’t occur naturally. It is obtained after heating and mixing charcoal, herbs, and spices with the Himalayan salt. The black salt is not always black. It is reddish-brown or purple in color. The black color is attained by mixing activated charcoal in it. (information source)

Double Black Pro Ingredients

Wormwood (Artemisia Judaica - ARJ)

Artemisia absinthium (wormwood) is a well-known traditional herb, mentioned in almost all books of herbal medicine in the western world. It is readily available and enjoys, since centuries, broad traditional use in many health disorders. (From the research "Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) suppresses tumor necrosis factor alpha and accelerates healing in patients with Crohn’s disease – A controlled clinical trial")

In traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used for the treatment of fevers and hemorrhoids. More research on Artemisia annua L. and its derivatives, especially artemisinin and other metabolites will help to increase the knowledge and value of A. annua and its constituents. Phenolics from Artemisia annua consists of coumarins, flavones, flavanols, phenolic acids, and miscellaneous. Artemisinin has attracted much attention from scientists due to its potent antimalarial properties as secondary metabolites. Moreover, more attentions are focusing on the roles of artemisinin and its derivatives in treating obesity and metabolic diseases. They also have anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti protozoa, anti-helminthic, anti-fungal, antiangiogenic and antiproliferation properties. (Taken from the AcademicPres review: Exploring Artemisia annua L., artemisinin and its derivatives, from traditional Chinese wonder medicinal science by Mohamad H. SHAHRAJABIAN, Wenli SUN, Qi CHENG)

The antimalarial drug artemisinin from Artemisia annua demonstrated remarkably strong activity against Helicobacter pylori, the pathogen responsible for peptic ulcer diseases. Whatever may be the mechanism(s) of action of artemisinin analogues in manifesting strong and potentially useful anti-H. pylori features, it is worth reiterating that artemisinin is a cheap and relatively safe drug with few and minor side effects even at high doses. Because much of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic information is available, it can very well take a faster route in developing an appropriate candidate drug against H. pylori infections. (information source)

The phytochemical analysis of the ArJ essential oils was conducted and revealed the dominance of the highly active antioxidant volatile compounds, oxygenated monoterpenes, and cinnamic acid derivatives in the essential oil constituents of the plant. Such classes of compounds were reflected in the in vitro and in vivo potential antioxidant activity of the ArJ essential oil. The antimicrobial and antibiofilm potential of ArJ essential oil against Bacillus cereus, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger confirmed in the study supports the effectiveness of ArJ essential oil as a wound healing candidate. These results validate the curative role of ArJ in the treatment of skin wounds, which is attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as its high proportion of oxygenated monoterpenes and cinnamate derivatives. Now, wormwood is used as a digestive aid and has exciting implications for SIBO. Standard treatment for SIBO is traditional antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria in the small intestine. However, recent research has shed light on the ability of herbs like wormwood to work as a more natural antibiotic. Wormwood has strong antimicrobial properties that help fight bacterial overgrowth. Research shows that it can inhibit a wide range of bacterial strains. One study of 104 patients with SIBO sought to determine how effective herbs were in killing off unfavorable bacteria. Patients were assigned to take either the traditional antibiotic Rifaximin or an herbal remedy that included wormwood for four weeks. At the end of the trial, 46% of those who took the herbal remedy had no evidence of SIBO, versus 34% of antibiotic users. Researchers concluded that herbal therapy was as effective as antibiotics in treating SIBO. Artemisinin is a particularly strong and active ingredient in sweet wormwood. It is a common supplement to enhance malaria medication because of its ability to fight off foreign invaders in the body. Like wormwood, artemisinin has strong antimicrobial properties to combat bacteria. It can be used to help bring down bacteria where it shouldn’t be in the small intestine. SIBO often causes an inflammatory response in the body. These inflammatory symptoms, such as excess bloating and pain, in turn, make SIBO symptoms even worse. Artemisinin can be used to help break this unhelpful cycle. It can help bring down this inflammatory response to bring relief to some SIBO symptoms. Researchers found that it inhibits cytokines, which are proteins in the immune system that promote inflammation. (information source)

Black salt

Ayurveda considers black salt to be a cooling spice that is utilized as a digestive and therapeutic agent. The benefits of black salt for digestion are:

  • Black salt improves digestion by increasing the natural production of acid in the stomach and increasing the formation of bile juice in the liver. o It also helps boost the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. Bloating can be caused by a variety of factors, including overeating, allergy, constipation, inflammatory bowel syndrome, etc.

  • Black salt’s alkaline characteristics aid to neutralize excess acids in the stomach.

  • The minerals it contains help to reduce the damage caused by acid reflux. o Due to its Rechana (laxative) properties black salt is beneficial for constipation. It softens hard stools and makes moving bowels easier. (information source)

  • Reduces heartburn and bloating: Black salt stimulates bile production in the liver and helps control heartburn and bloating. It restricts acid levels and reduces reflux. A pinch of salt can reduce the formation of gases and limit bloating and flatulence. (information source)

Black walnut hull

Black walnuts, or Juglans nigra, grow wild across the United States and are the second most cultivated walnut in North America, following English walnuts. They consist of a kernel, a dry outer covering known as a hull, and a hard shell. The kernel is the part of the walnut that’s commonly eaten raw or roasted and can be pressed for oil. The hulls contain antioxidants and are used in extracts and supplements for medicinal purposes, such as to treat parasitic infections or decrease inflammation. Black walnut hulls are high in tannins — compounds with antibacterial properties. Tannins in black walnuts have antibacterial effects against, for example, Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli — bacteria that commonly cause foodborne illnesses. (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/black-walnut) Black walnuts contain three main components that make them beneficial when consumed – antioxidants, polyunsaturated fats, and phenolic compounds. The walnuts also contain a range of other nutrients that includes fiber, protein, melatonin, and folate, which is a type of B vitamin. (information source)

Special compounds, including juglone, tannins, and natural iodine in these powerful nuts, and particularly green black walnut hulls, make them not only an effective anti-parasitic, but also a potent anti-bacterial, anti-viral, fungicide and intestinal cleanser. Black walnut is used to treat ringworm, yeast and candida infections and is an excellent support agent for harmful organism cleansing. Other Benefits of Organic Black Walnut Hull: Supports healthy digestion and bowel regularity, provides oxygen to the blood, helps balance blood sugar, powerful detoxifier. (information source)

The active component in black walnut is juglone, which can inhibit specific enzymes that are required for metabolism. Juglone is toxic to many insect herbivores and has antioxidant effects. The anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic effects of juglone have been previously demonstrated. Juglone can also tighten the skin, relieve irritation, and improve cardiovascular status. It also has antifungal and antimicrobial activity. (information source)

Black Walnut contains an active ingredient known as juglone, which can be as effective as some commercial antifungal drugs. This particular study found that juglone to have “moderate antifungal activity” and fights fungal infections as effectively as other common antifungal treatments, such as zinc undecylenate and selenium sulfide. It appears that black walnut can inhibit certain enzymes of the yeast which are needed for metabolic function, thus preventing it from growing and spreading. (information source)

Black walnut hull is an excellent source of iodine. Iodine is required to produce thyroid hormones; iodine also supports harmful organism cleansing by affixing itself to harmful organisms and annihilating them. (information source)

Today, researchers found that the hull contains several helpful properties that make it a superfood. It is especially useful for those with SIBO. The hull has strong antibacterial properties to fight off strains in the small intestine. They are particularly high in tannins, which researchers found inhibits bacterial growth. Several studies have shown the antimicrobial benefits of tannins. One study found that it was particularly strong against several strains of bacteria. A test-tube study demonstrated that it stopped the growth of bacteria. Yet a third study compared it to several other plants and found that black walnut hull was most effective in fighting off bacteria. Black walnut hull could provide a potent boost to those who are looking to fight off bacteria naturally in the gut. Antioxidants are also a key property to support the body. Some research shows higher oxidative stress in those who have SIBO, especially those with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Research shows that the black walnut hull is rich in antioxidants to help combat the oxidative stress that SIBO can bring. (information source)
